For the first time we're seeing open source work that isn't derivative. And for the frist time we're seeing what we might call a usability stack.
We were just incredibly impressed with the Gnome community. The energy, the creativity, the good engineering. It's one of the things that convinced me to dive in to this thing. I spent my life up until February of this year more or less involved with proprietary software: Apple, NeXT and Sun. But my first brush with open source was at NeXT, where we based all our development tools on Gnu. We actually bundeled Gnu tools with NeXT. We extended the GCC to handle Objective C. They were still using the Copyleft hen.
I invited Richard out to meet with us because Steve Jobs said "What is this Copyleft stuff, and why should we be shipping free software? I'm not sure there were any bits exchanged in that communication.
